About the Writer
My name is Alice Bulmer. I’m a writer and editor by training and experience: websites, eBooks, magazines, books, newspapers.
My latest book is Meet Your Greens: Enliven Your Salads With Herbal Energetics. Read about it here. And you can buy it on Amazon here.
Thirteen years ago I came to live in Hamilton, a city on the beautiful Waikato River in the heartland of New Zealand.
I’m fascinated by all kinds of food cultures and diverse flavours and dietary patterns.

Personally, I’m an omnivore, locavore, ethicurian. I go for free range and organic where possible. I like cooking with real ingredients – I have an affinity with the Weston A Price Nourishing Traditions back to basics approach. I love growing and cooking with herbs and I also love making (and eating) traditional fermented foods – sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha and beyond. I’ve been mostly wheat free for 30 years. My favourite herbs are parsley and thyme, closely followed by rosemary, tarragon, basil and nettles (I love nettle tea). My favourite fruit is a tree-ripened apple, or a freshly picked peach. I enjoy gardening but I’m very sporadic about it, so the plants that grow are the ones that thrive on neglect. I love growing salad greens – curly endive and chicory are essentials. And I am very proud to have in my garden some taro plants whose ancestors arrived on the Tainui canoe in the 13th century. (Here’s my post about what I do with taro.)
I spent a whole decade catering to the appetites of two ravenous teenage males – a.k.a. “stomachs on legs” – where we ate through the contents of the larder and the fridge twice every week. In those days quantity and timing of food usually came ahead of quality and any other considerations. But those days are past, and we now sometimes even have leftovers.
When I’m not thinking about food, I’m often making music. I play fiddle and ukulele for fun. I play in a 9-member ukulele group called The Strumbles. And I love teaching ukulele. Find out more here: www.alicebulmermusic.com.
I write about wider issues such as economics and ecology here: www.alicebulmer.com.
I’m also co-author (with Clare Jackson) of the Green Footprint series of organic gardening eBooks and audiobooks.
