The Hamilton Farmers’ Market has recently moved to its new permanent home in Claudelands Park. The stallholders say they’re happy to be in a covered building. There are stalls outside as well, but it will definitely give the market more options in bad weather.
Market chairman Jono Walker has had his eye on this site for several years, and he’s really pleased to have finally secured it for the market.
The farmers’ market has moved four times in the last eight years. First it was in the Wintec carpark on the corner of Tristram St; then they moved to the Sonning carpark near the Claudelands Bridge; then they moved to the Te Rapa racecourse.
This new site and building is great – it’s the best by far, from my perspective as a consumer. And I’m glad the stallholders and producers are happy as well.

Room to grow
The new building means there’s plenty of space for the market to get bigger.
The parking lot was working well last Sunday. I think the signage could have been a bit clearer, for people finding their way to the new site for the first time.
Local fish and fries
On Sunday we took home some locally grown potatoes from Clif’s Gardens and gurnard fillets from Raglan Fish. Sunday night dinner was excellently fresh pan-fried fish and oven fries.
The Hamilton Farmers’ Market
Brooklyn Rd, Claudelands
Entrance to the parking lot is at Gate 4, which is off Brooklyn Rd, across from East St. There are signs that say “Parking $5” but that doesn’t apply to the farmers’ market parking, it’s for people going to shows at the Claudelands Events Centre.
Of course, you could always walk, or cycle – quite a few people seem to be riding bikes to the market.
